Grandstream HT502 or HT286 ATA adapter

Grandstream HT502 or HT286 ATA adapter

The Grandstream HT502 and HT286 adapters act as an analog adapter to connect your analog telephone to the Protel PBX, or other SIP PBX. The ATA adapter may also be used to connect a business class 1 or 2 line telephone to the PBX, such as the analog offerings from Aastra. If configuring a 2 line phone, you will require the use of the HT502 device since the HT286 is a single line device. Using this is recommended for customers who do not have network cabling in certain areas of a facility and only has CAT3 wiring to the location.

The provisioning explained here will explain how to do the configuration as we found as the easiest method to do so. You will require an analog telephone to complete step 1 of the installation process to change some settings on the telephone device.

As you can see, you have two FXS ports on the back of the unit. This allows you to have a 2 line telephone(s) or also using them to connect it to a legacy telephone system if needed. Of course you may also be using one only or using the ports for two analog telephones.

Getting Started Basics

   - Have an analog telephone available
   - Have a network cable and network connection available
   - Have your device powered in

When you get your device it has a settings preset and we will be changing those to make it simple to reach the device via a web interface. At the end of this article you will find all of the connected analog telephone key presses if needed.

Key presses from your analog phone to remember

1. “*” shifts down to the next menu option
2. “#” returns to the main menu
3. “9” functions as the ENTER key in many cases to confirm an option
4. All entered digit sequences have known lengths - 2 digits for menu option and 12 digits for IP
address. For IP address, add 0 before the digits if the digits are less than 3 (i.e. - 192.168.0.26
should be key in like 192168000026. No decimal is needed).
5. Key entry can not be deleted but the phone may prompt error once it is detected

Step 1 - Basic settings

Using an analog telephone connected to the "Phone 1" jack of the device we will want to make some basic changes so we can access the device from a web browser. At this point you need to pick up your handset and follow the next steps below to get it connected from your favorite web browser. Your ATA comes delivered with HTTP access turned off and a Static IP we will now change.

Press ***  (You will hear "Enter a menu option)

Press 01  (You will move this from Static to Dynamic/DHCP mode)
Press 9 to toggle between static and dynamic
Press # to allow another option when completed with Static/Dynamic

Press 12 (Allow WAN port access)
Press 9 to toggle between on and off
Press # to allow another option when completed with Static/Dynamic

You device will now need to be rebooted to save the changes you've made to it.

Press 99 (Reboot the device)
Press 9 to reboot the device

This completed Step 1 of the configuration and you are now ready to proceed to step 2 and configure the device to setup the SIP extension.

After the ATA reboots you will want to know what the IP address is and with your analog telephone still connected, you will perform the following:

Press ***
Press 02 and the current IP address will be announced to you. You will use this IP address to connect to the ATA with your web browser.

Step 2 - Configure the ATA for an Extension

In a web browser enter the IP address of your HT502 or HT286 and bring up the following page:

In the example above the screenshot displays the login page. Enter the password of admin and login to the ATA device. When you login you will see the status page displayed and information is shown as displayed below:

The Port Status will display the activity of the device when connected. This allows you to see if the port is registered or not along with other activity of the device. Since the HT502 and HT286 allow features to be entered via the handset, users may press DND, or forward from the phone.

A note about forwarding

When you forward your telephone from the adapter, it is different than forwarding from the switch. Whereas a forward from the switch, which can be activated by the extension user in the extension user login, the ATA would perform the forward. It is recommended that on a business system you will want to use the screen options for the extension user.

Basic Settings - Set Timezone and NAT TCP timeout

As you can see below the timezone and the NAT TCP timeout will be changed to your timezone and 3600. As you can see the settings for the device are displayed in the basic settings. You may want to review these to see if there is something else you may want to change or tweak.

This completed what is required for the Protel PBX on the basic settings.

Advanced Settings - Changing the DHCP option

We recommend turning off your DHCP options since the ATA device does have a DHCP server included. In some cases, such as a WISP, you may want these options turned on. In most cases it's best to turn off DHCP to avoid conflicts in your network. The following screen displays the advanced option:

Now lets provision the SIP trunk itself in the next step.

STEP 3 - Provision your extension

Now comes the fun part of provisioning the ATA to your Protel PBX and allowing an analog device to connect. You have two ports on the HT502 and one port on the HT286 and depending on which device you are using you will enter the information on the screen.

NOTE: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU HAVE YOUR EXTENSION PROVISIONED ON THE PROTEL PBX OR YOU MAY FIND THAT YOU WILL END UP BLOCKING YOUR SUBNET BECAUSE THE PBX WILL BELIEVE IT IS AN ATTACK.

FXS Ports 1 and 2 would be the same as the example here using FXS Port 1.

Click on the FXS port you are provisioning. In this example we are provisioning a single FXS port on an HT502. Again, if using an HT286 you have only one port available.

The following screenshot is displayed with a configured FXS port for an analog telephone or fax. When you complete this and reboot your device will connect to the PBX.

Use the information from your provisioning and you will now have a connected FXS port acting as an extension on your Protel PBX or hosted telephone service.
